Reverse Video

Play it backwards. With full control.

What Is Video Reversal?

Video reversal plays a video clip backwards — last frame to first frame. SoundWorks reverses the video stream with control over fragment splitting, bitrate, fade effects, and audio handling.

Why Reverse Video?

Creative effects. Reversed footage creates surreal, attention-grabbing sequences for social media, music videos, and artistic projects.

Restoration workflows. Review footage backwards to spot issues, verify continuity, or analyze motion in reverse.

Content production. Create before/after reveals, rewind transitions, and time-reversal effects that are popular in short-form video content.

How It Works

Step 1: Select a video file. Load any supported video format (MP4, AVI, MKV, MOV, WebM, and more).

Step 2: Configure options.

  • Fragment splitting: Split the video into fragments for processing. Useful for very long videos where single-pass reversal would use too much memory.
  • Time limit: Reverse only a portion of the video by specifying a time limit.
  • Bitrate control: Set the output video bitrate manually, or let SoundWorks suggest an optimal bitrate based on the source.
  • Fade effects: Add fade-in and fade-out transitions to the reversed output.
  • Video re-encoding: Choose to re-encode with custom settings or use stream copy where possible.

Step 3: Handle audio.

  • Keep the original audio (plays forward over reversed video)
  • Replace with a different audio file
  • Remove audio entirely

Step 4: Process. SoundWorks reverses the video and saves the output. Choose the output file location and format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reverse just a section of a video? Yes. Use the time limit option to reverse only a specific portion, or use the video cut tool first to extract the segment you want to reverse.

Does reversing degrade video quality? Reversing requires re-encoding the video stream, which involves some quality reduction. Use a high bitrate to minimize this. SoundWorks can suggest an optimal bitrate based on your source video.

Is the audio reversed too? By default, the audio plays forward (unchanged). You can replace it with a different audio file or remove it entirely.

How long does processing take? Processing time depends on video length, resolution, and bitrate. Fragment splitting helps manage memory for long videos. Typical short clips process in under a minute.
